"It All Has Ended" A Poem by V.G. Grace on the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic

In the gentle calm of evening, whence comes chaos.

"Women and children first!"

They release a cry,

as societies shake,

as the ocean sways.

From the contented to the struggling,

from the aristocrat to the immigrant,

from the matron to the seamstress;

all descend into the dark chill

of infamy.

One humanity

in separate worlds

all become

a searing legend of loss.

An embrace of desperation--

brief warmth

amidst the

cold

merciless

ice.

Some close

weary eyes.

Some wait

while other lips whisper

soft,

such soft

prayer.

Farewell to sister,

farewell to brother,

farewell to mother, father and child,

as the swirling ocean entombs the great ship.

Cries

fly into the night air

while the frozen still of sorrow,

the former glory of the sea,

slides

into regretful slumber.

A bird soars overhead,

with its face arched towards the sky.
